travel resume
Make your way through one of the most ancient district of Athens “La Plaka”, an old district of Athens displaying many greek taverns and cafes, where many tourists will dance the Sirtaki, listen to Rebetika and drink ouzo or Retsina wine to wash down a plate of greek mezze. Look for agios georgios Church. Now you can forget Athens busy and noisy traffic. This is Anafiotica. Do not hope for herds of tourists, for the only friends you will make, up there, will be cats. Expect to be enchanted by the peaceful Anafiotica. This part of Plaka actually gives the impression of an island. Anafiotika is all about colors: white : the stairs and the walls, blue or red (the shutters and doors), vibrant red, crimson even, the flowers; and all the colors displayed against a pristine azurean sky. with its small white-washed houses, narrow streets and steps, stone walls and gardens filled with flowers. The first builders of the area were two homeless workers from Anafi Island. Others came after and were skilled craftsmen, builders and marble cutters who worked at construction sites throughout Athens. Anafiotika and its inhabitants live peacefully at the foot of the acropolis hill. Expect to climb up and down slippery stairs, and puff and suffer from the heat and hot dry winds. Come on ! it will all be worth it, I guarantee that you will enjoy the views. Coming out of Anafiotika, stop and step inside the old little Orthodox church and pay your respect in the old greek tradition: drop a coin in the collection box, pick up 2 candles and after lighting them, stick them on the huge “candelabra”. Pray that you will have the opportunity to visit again this enchanting Anafiotika.
