Brazil: Security concerns rise in Salvador de Bahia

The security situation is still tense in the city of Salvador, the capital of the Bahia State, as the strike organised by hundreds of policemen continues. Yesterday, February 6th, clashes between protesters supporting the strikers and military forces erupted in front of the Legislative Assembly building. Due to the current situation, the United States issued a travel advisory warning their citizens about an increase of crime in Salvador de Bahia. Further clashes between protesters and military forces cannot be ruled-out.

Hundreds of policemen decided to occupy the Legislative Assembly building with their families on January 31st, asking for an increase of wages and better working conditions. Since the beginning of the strike at least 94 people have been murdered in the Bahia State due to a lack of security. The increasing violence prompted the government to send 3,000 federal troops to guarantee the security of local population and of the thousands of tourists that should arrive to the city during the Carnival.

People travelling to Salvador de Bahia are advised to listen to all recommendations given by local authorities. Avoid the Legislative Assembly and the areas surrounding the building. Avoid all public gathering and demonstrations as they might turn violent at short notice. Due to the current situation, you must take extra security precautions during your stay. Keep a low profile.
