Johannesburg - Security precautions?

I’m going in South Africa in September during two weeks to visit a friend. Everyone told me that Johannesburg is a very dangerous city. What are the security precautions to take?

I have been to Jo’burg and felt quite safe wondering around. You need to be more careful when approach by someone, especially small kids. Don’t think of hiring a car because the car hijack is very high. Get a taxi or hotel taxi if you want to go somewhere. Best if you are in a group of people. Overall, my experience when I was there quite pleasant.
