Heart-Related Trouble and Chest Pain

Assess the situation

How to recognise that the victim is experiencing heart trouble

The victim complains of a sharp or crushing pain in the chest that lasts more than a few minutes; the pain may spread to the back, neck, jaw, shoulder or arm, especially the left one. The victim is often anxious, cold and abnormally pale. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness and nausea. In certain cases, the victim may have trouble breathing and speaking or suffer from paralysis of the limbs.

What are the risks?

Cardiac arrest can occur at any time; it is thus vital to call emergency services as soon as possible.

How to react

First considerations

Put the victim in a quiet spot and isolate him if he is agitated. Have the victim lay down to avoid any harm if he falls; if this is not possible, or if the victim has respiratory troubles, have him sit. Loosen the victim's collar and belt to facilitate breathing. If the victim asks spontaneously for sugar, give him some, preferably in chunks.

Warn emergency services

Ask the victim a couple of questions:

  • How long has he been in pain?
  • Is it the first time he has experienced this kind of pain?
  • What does he usually do when he has this type of pain? Does he take a particular medication? If the victim has medication, help him take it according to the doctor's prescription.
  • What is his typical health status (ongoing treatments, particular diseases, hospitalizations, surgery...)?
  • Call the emergency services and give them all of the above information, then supervise the victim while waiting for paramedics to arrive.
