Spain’s two main unions, UGT and Comisiones Obreras, have called for mass demonstrations across the country on Sunday, February 19th. The biggest protests should take place in Madrid, near Fuente de Neptuno. However, demonstrations could also erupt in other cities, including Barcelona. During the rallies, road closures and transport disruptions are likely. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled-out.
Unions are protesting against a labour reform that has to be approved by the government. Unions have already announced that if the turnout for the rallies is high, a general and nationwide strike will be organised. Spain is facing an economic turmoil; the unemployment rate (22.8 per cent of the workforce) has reached historical records on January 2012. The deterioration of the economic situation combined with the approval of unpopular austerity measures are likely to increase the social unrest, leading to further strikes and demonstrations.
Travellers are advised to listen to local and international media in order to get updated information. On February 19th, avoid areas where demonstrations usually occur as well as governmental buildings. Stay away from all public gatherings as they might turn violent at short notice.
