Diseases transmitted by insects or animalsOfficially, rabies is not present in Albania; however, there are packs of wandering dogs in Tirana and all over the country. Remain prudent and take all the precautions necessary before entering the country. In Albania, you can not find any immunization against rabies. There are cases of tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme disease in wooded areas. The former is an infection of central nervous system and may cause long-lasting or permanent neuropsychiatric sequelae (10-20% of infected patients). The latter is an infection that includes a characteristic rash, fever, arthritis and may cause neurological manifestations such as facial palsy. |

Diseases transmitted by food, water or through the environmentDiarrheic diseases are common among tourists who are not accustomed to local food or who do not take precautions. Cases of viral hepatitis (type A and E) are particularly frequent. Those diseases are transmitted by the ingestion of contaminated food or drinks. Gastroenteritis cases are numerous in summertime. |
