The government has declared a state of national calamity after last week’s flash floods and landslides triggered by typhoon Washi killed more than 1,000 people. According to the national disaster agency, more than 338,000 people in 13 provinces have been affected by typhoon Washi, with nearly 43,000 others still in evacuation centres. Most of the casualties have been reported in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in the Mindanao region in southern Philippines.
Every year, Philippines are hit by 20 storms in average; most of them affect the northern part of the country. Typhoons are usual in the Philippines, especially from May to November. Communication, water and power outages are reported in areas affected by the storm. Severe transport disruptions, including flight and train cancellations, are to be expected.
People currently in the Philippines should monitor local media in order to get updated information. It is firmly advised to follow all recommendation given by local authorities.
