An indefinite general strike has crippled normal life in the eastern region of the country, affecting in particular the districts of Shankhuwasabha, Dhankuta, Sunsari, Taplejung, Panchthar, Ilam and Jhapa. The strike has halted transportation in the region, including the East-West and Koshi-Mechi highways.
The strike was called by the ethnic Federal Limbuwan State Council (FLSC) to protest against the exclusion of their representation in the State Restructuring Commission (SRC). If the action endures, shortages in fuel and food supplies likely to trigger violent reaction by the population are not exclude.
Travellers are advised to seek for alternative means of transport and allow more time for travel in the eastern region. Listen to local and international media in order to get updated information about possible transport disruptions (either caused by bad weather conditions or by strike action). Contact your embassy in order to get information concerning the risk of trekking in the country.
