Iraq, Social unrest and bomb attacks hit Baghdad

The popular civil uprising spreading through the Arab world since the beginning of the “Jasmine revolution” in Tunisia has now reached the streets of Iraq. Anti-government demonstrations, denouncing high unemployment rate, lack of services and high corruption, started last month. Last Friday, February 25th, a violent “day of rage” was organized in several Iraqi cities, including Baghdad; at least 20 protesters died in clashes with security forces. Demonstrations continued all week long and are likely to become more frequent and violent as the social upheaval is increasing. Moreover, the security is still showing signs of weakness; yesterday, March 2nd, five roadside bombs exploded in different neighborhoods in northwest Baghdad. At least one people died and 19 others were wounded. At the time being no group has claimed the responsibility of the attack.

The recent civil uprising inspired by the Tunisia and Egypt revolutions, has precipitated the resignations of at least three provincial governors. At the time being, the protests in Iraq have not reached the scale of those in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya and demonstrators are not demanding any regime change but social reforms. However, authorities have reacted violently to this social upheaval, reinforcing the security measures during the “day of rage” and linking the social unrest to al-Qaeda. Moreover, the country remains threatened by Sunni militants, including al-Qaeda. Even if violence dropped since 2006-2007, the security across Iraq is still precarious; bombings, shootings and assassinations of authorities and security forces occur daily.

Terrorist attacks are frequent throughout Iraq. Be aware that most western Embassies advise their citizens against all travel to Iraq, including in Baghdad as conditions remain extremely dangerous throughout the city. Civilians are often targeted by terrorist attacks; the risk of kidnapping, especially for Westerners, is very high. Violence usually increases before, during or after major religious events. As the country is facing a social unrest, travellers currently in Iraq should avoid all demonstrations and gatherings as they can turn violent at a short notice. Keep a low profile.
