At least 18 people have been killed and 114 others injured in a series of four car bombings across Baghdad. The deadliest attack on Monday occurred in the predominantly Shia neighbourhood Sadr City, in the northeastern part of Bagdad, where a booby-trapped car killed 10 people and injured 60 others. In the central Allawi district, another explosion killed four people and wounded 15 others. A car bomb targeting the convoy of a senior interior ministry official killed one civilian and a policeman and injured four policemen in the southeastern neighborhood of New Baghdad. Two people were also killed and 12 others wounded when a vehicle exploded near a market in the district of Hussainiya. Iraqi officials were unsure if the bombings, that came between 7 AM and 9 AM, were coordinated.
Although violence has decreased in Iraq, various armed groups are still able to strike with deadly results. In March 2009, at least 250 people were killed in violence.
Despite improving security such violence remains common in the capital city. Conditions in Iraq are extremely dangerous. The risk of terrorism directed against foreigners remains extremely high. Be aware that most western Embassies strongly urge their citizens against travel to Iraq.
