On Wednesday, August 19, a series of suicide attacks in central Baghdad killed at least 95 and injured more than 500. The attacks blasts targeted the Foreign Ministry, the Green Zone and the Finance Ministry. On Thursday, August, 20, shortly before 08 AM local time, a bicycle loaded with explosives blew up near a restaurant killing 2 people and wounding 10 others.
Wednesday's attacks account for the bloodiest day in the capital since U.S. forces withdrew from Iraqi cities on June 30 and since February 1, 2008, when bombs at Baghdad pet markets killed 98 people. Terrorist attacks remain extremely frequent in Iraq especially in Baghdad, Kirkuk and Mosul. Be aware that Baghdad Green Zone is one of the most closely guarded areas of the city.
Conditions are extremely dangerous throughout Iraq. The risk of terrorism remains extremely high. Be aware that most western Embassies strongly urge their citizens against travel to Iraq.
