On Monday, May 10th, a wave of terrorist attacks killed more than 100 people throughout Iraq, the bloodiest day of the year. More than 350 people have been wounded in a series of shootings and suicide bombings. The violence began with a series of drive-by shootings targeting police and army officers in the streets of Baghdad, while the central city of Hilla saw the deadliest attack, when factory workers were hit by three bomb attacks, killing at least 45 people and wounding 140. Other attacks, including car bombings, took place in Baghdad, in Basra and Falluja. Al Qaeda in Iraq has been blamed for the attacks.
By nightfall, Monday had turned into worst day of violence this year, surpassing the death toll from a series of bombings in Baghdad targeting Shiite mosques and neighborhoods on April 23rd.
Security situation remains extremely precarious in Iraq. Terrorist attacks remain frequent. Be aware that most western Embassies strongly urge their citizens against travelling to Iraq. Conditions are extremely dangerous throughout Baghdad. The risk of terrorism remains extremely high.
