On January 25th, three coordinated attacks targeting hotels near the green zone area in central Bagdad killed at least 36 people, wounding 71. Suicide car bombers stroke close to the Sheraton and Palestine Hotels in the centre of the city, and the Babil hotel in the south. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but Iraqi official blamed Al Qaeda for the bombings.
This latest assault is part of a series of coordinated attacks since August on what should be well-protected targets near or in Bagdad international Green Zone, which is supposed to be a safe haven for Iraqi officials, international agencies and foreigners.
Security situation remains extremely precarious in Iraq. Terrorist attacks remain frequent in the country. Be aware that most western Embassies strongly urge their citizens against travel to Iraq. Conditions are extremely dangerous throughout the country. The risk of terrorism remains extremely high.
