On Tuesday November 2nd, a series of explosions took place throughout Baghdad killing at least 57 people and wounding 248 others. According to official sources, at least twelve car bomb explosions and one roadside bombing were registered in mainly Shia neighbourhoods: Khadhimiya (northwest), Zuhour, Ur and Sadr (northeast), Bayaa and Shulaa (southwest) areas. The neighbourhood of Yarmuk (a Sunni-Shiite mixed area in western Baghdad) was also targeted by the attacks. This wave of attacks comes just after gunmen seized a Catholic church on Sunday October 31st, causing the death of 52 hostages, including policemen.
Even if violence has diminished considerably in Iraq since 2006-2007, terrorist attacks led by Al-Qaeda in Iraq militants continue day after day. Over the past three month; violence increased in the capital city.
Terrorist attacks are frequent throughout Iraq. Be aware that most western Embassies advise their citizens against all travel to Baghdad as conditions are extremely dangerous throughout the city. Civilians are often targeted by terrorist attacks and Occidental travellers could be also victims of kidnapping.
