Numerous flights have been cancelled today, December 5th, at Beijing International Airport as thick smog blankets the city and the north of the country. Airport authorities cancelled over 130 flights by midday (local time) and disruptions are likely to continue over the next hours. Several major highways connecting Beijing with the north of the country were also closed this morning; however, the situation seems to be improving.
Beijing is one of the most polluted cities in the world; the air quality of the city is very poor. Last month, the American Embassy in Beijing published data suggesting the quality of the air was “hazardous”. Chinese authorities contested these data, suggesting the US embassy was exaggerating the issue.
Passengers travelling in and out of Beijing international airport are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport. It is also important to remember that pollution may represent a health risk for immuno-depressed persons, or people having respiratory dysfunctions. For those individuals it is advised to consult a physician before travelling and to limit outdoor activities.
