Burma slowly opening its doors to the world

Amid Burma’s move toward democratic elections in April hundreds of political prisoners and protestors, including a former prime minister, were released from captivity last month as the government signalled a readiness to embrace change. The United States followed Burma’s diplomatic progress by announcing it would reinstate an ambassador in the Rangoon after the US pulled out in 1990 when the military junta took control, ignoring the election results that saw Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi claim victory. Hillary Clinton’s visit marked the first time in 50 years that a US secretary of state stepped foot into Burma. If the leaders continue to pave the way to democracy with successful elections the lifting of trade sanctions could be next. Despite the goodwill being shown from the Southeast Asian country that fell to military rule 20 years ago, the international community is closely watching the situation to make sure Burma makes good on its promises.

Make Burma part of the travel plans

Regardless of the positive changes occurring in Burma entering the country remains challenging. Travelers are required to obtain visas before leaving the US and are recommended to enter the country through airports as many travelers are denied entry at land-border crossings. Journalists and writers are not warmly accepted as visitors and are often either returned home or denied visas. Travelers are also warned that the situation can quickly deteriorate without warning, based on past events, leading to violent protests and security crackdowns.
