Diseases transmitted by insects or animals

The whole country is infected with malaria. Strains are not resistant to chloroquine (zone 1).

There is a small risk of leishmaniasis in coastal areas and foothills. There are two form of the disease, the cutaneous form which causes skin sores and the visceral form which affects internal organs. This disease is transmitted by infected sand flies.

There are cases of animal rabies in the country.

Diseases transmitted by food, water or through the environment

Diarrheic diseases are frequent among travelers who do not take precautions.

Due to the risk of amoebic diseases, travelers are advised not to bathe in fresh waters (lake, rivers) and should not walk bare-foot.

Diseases transmitted by contact with infected people

Tuberculosis is common in the country.
