George Clooney arrested at Sudan protest

    George Clooney arrested

Known for taking on politically sensitive film projects actor George Clooney is grabbing headlines for entering into a real-life political issue. The 50-year-old star was arrested alongside his father, and former journalist, Nick Clooney, outside of the Sudan embassy in Washington, D.C. Clooney was joined by other activists and members of congress as they protested the humanitarian crisis involving Sudan and South Sudan. The group was arrested without incident after they ignored police instructions to leave the embassy property. Clooney is no stranger to the Sudanese conflict. He has made many trips to the region and has spoken before the UN and the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Yesterday Clooney met with President Barack Obama to discuss Sudan. At least 300,000 people have died, and another 2.7 million have been displaced since the Sudan conflict erupted in 2003.

South Sudan deemed too dangerous for travelers

Despite becoming an independent nation from Sudan in 2011, the Republic of South Sudan continues to struggle with an armed conflict. The U.S. Department of State urges Americans to avoid all travel to the region. Fighting along the border areas are frequent and can occur without warning.
