Cyclone Giovanna continues to threaten Madagascar

Cyclone Giovanna is expected to strike Madagascar with a tropical storm-force tomorrow, Saturday, February 18th at 12:00 (GMT). Heavy rains and strong winds are expected to hit the country in coming hours. Today, authorities announced that at least 16 people have been killed and thousands have been left homeless since Tuesday, when Giovanna made a first landfall in eastern Madagascar, near the city of Toamasina. The death toll is likely to rise in coming hours. Severe weather conditions are likely to trigger flash flooding and landslides in the affected regions. Road, maritime and air traffic disruptions are likely.

Over the past months, Madagascar has been affected by two powerful storms that brought flooding to parts of the country, damaging infrastructures and killing dozens.

Travellers are advised to listen to local and international media in order to get updated information. Stay away from flooded areas and rivers. If you are told to evacuate do so and follow specific routes. Confirm all your travel arrangements and check your flight status before heading to the airport.
