Yesterday, Sunday, February 5th, riots continued in central Cairo for the fourth consecutive day. Hundreds of people blocked the streets leading to the Interior Ministry in downtown Cairo, clashing with security forces near Mansour Street. Violent clashes were also reported near Tahrir Square. In a separate movement, Syrians demonstrators ransacked their embassy in Cairo this weekend protesting the latest bloodshed which took place in Homs (Syria) on Saturday. The security situation in Egypt remains highly volatile and more unrest and sporadic violence could erupt without warning, especially in the country’s capital.
According to authorities, 12 people have been killed in Cairo and Suez and more than 2,500 others have been wounded since Thursday, February 2nd when demonstrations organised by the al-Ahly Ultra erupted in several cities.
People currently in Egypt are advised to listen to local and international media in order to get updated information about rallies. Avoid all public gatherings and demonstrations as they might turn violent at short notice. Keep a low profile during your stay.
